GOIN' DOWN THE ROAD

Goin' down the road
Lookin' for a way to travel,
Askin' questions of everybody I see,
Askin' questions of people
Who don't know the answer,
Tossed like a ship on a troubled sea.

I look around an' I see
People hating each other.
They say climbin' up a ladder
Of success is what to do.
But they don't know what to say
When their kids get in trouble.
They're too hung up in themselves
To love Billy or Sue.

We're makin' rockets, guns, church buildings,
And a new chamber of commerce,
And last week we went to school
For the PTA.
But the teacher said that Billy was
Havin' some problems,
And Sue was caught smokin' marijuana today.

I heard about this war
We were fightin' for our freedom,
And they say that killin' people
Is the only way.
But I'm sure that if everyone
Would just read their Bible,
Then they'd find out that Jesus
Had some other things to say.

I know the answer's not
In a big pile of money,
A new car, a pretty girl,
Or a fancy diamond ring.
I need somethin' for real
That an earthquake can't bother,
Somethin' inside my soul
That can set me free.
I hear lotsa' people talkin'
And they say they know the answers,
But if they know what they're doin'
Why're they so afraid to die?
Now the only thing that I can say
That really made me happy,
Was when I came to Jesus
And He eased my troubled mind.
