UPDATE TO MOVIE LIST--Compiled by W.S.--8/88
Dear Family,
GBY! WL&PFY! Here is an update of our first Movie List, found in Heavenly Helpers Vol.5. We hope this will be a blessing & a guide in aiding & enabling you to watch good, inspiring, edifying & entertaining movies! We'd like to thank all of you who sent in your opinions & comments on various movies, & thus contributed to this new list. GBY! To have a complete list of all movies previewed & recommended by W.S. to date, consult Heavenly Helpers Vol.5 & this new list.
We'd like to briefly review how to use this listing, as there are a few changes from the list in Heavenly Helpers Vol.5.
The movies are listed alphabetically by title, followed by the main actors & actresses. Then, on the next line, there are two codes which give you the following information:
1. The first code denotes the audience, who the movie's best suited for:
A = Adults Only: Not suitable for teens or children. They should not even be in the room. For example, it would not be best for a toddler to be playing in a corner of the room while the adults are watching "The Border" or "The Mission".
T = Teens: Suitable for teens, age 12 & over. It is very important to remember that not all teens are of the same maturity level, as some 13-year-olds could handle a movie that a particularly sensitive 15-year-old might not be able to. This rating is just a rough guideline, & you will have to preview the movie yourself beforehand & see if it's suitable for your particular teens & children. Pray for the Lord's leading as to what they can benefit from.--Jam.1:5. Please see Hope of the Future #3 for an updated video list of "Good Videos for Teens" (these are the best & most suggested or suitable for teens of all movies with a "T" rating), & FSM 104 for tips on previewing & explaining videos to teens.
OC = Older Children (9-11): The same warning applies here as for the teens.
All = Good for audiences of all ages. There are not too many of them. They will usually interest children.
2. The second code is the rating:
1 = Good movies: Either very good entertainment or with a significant message.
2 = Movies that most viewers considered worthwhile, or at least entertaining, but not necessarily "block-busters"
3 = These films are not recommended & are considered a waste of time.
You will notice that some films have a "+" or a "-" after the rating. This is to help "fine tune" the recommendation. We hope it's a help.--Love, Your Movie Eds
Some Reminders on Choosing & Viewing Movies
Choosing a movie, especially when a large group is going to be spending two hours of their precious time watching it, is a very important job, & should not be taken too lightly. Be sure to take into account who your audience is & what kind of occasion it is.
Before having your entire Home waste their time watching a bad movie, if you are considering a movie which is not on this list, please have someone preview it.
Pray before you say! Avoid the tendency to make disparaging or negative remarks either during or after the movie. It's usually best not to editorialise. Keep comments positive, uplifting & brief. We've found it helpful to have someone act as the "video captain" or monitor. It's often good to discuss it together afterwards, & bring out the lessons & morals in a positive way. It's better to avoid making too many comments about a movie to those who have yet to see it, so that it doesn't prejudice their opinion.
Be sure to pray as a group, both before & after a movie, that the Lord will bless the movie, that you will learn good lessons from it, that you can "choose the good & eschew the evil", & that the Lord will protect you from any bad influences.
In choosing a movie for teens or children, an adult should preview it first, even if it is recommended, & then watch it with them, putting the movie on pause to explain lessons & different events happening, & sometimes fast-forwarding if necessary. Even some of the best movies have bad parts!
Also a reminder to try to avoid having children watch "live" TV, as even though you may have selected a good program, you have no idea what might suddenly come on, & can't "pause" to explain, thus the damage is done before you can stop it!
As always, we realise that this list may be subject to some difference of opinion, as there are "different strokes for different folks", but we hope that it will be a help & guide, & bring you many hours of uplifting video viewing, enjoyment & edification! The following videos were listed in HH5 before we had special rating for teen viewing. We are now giving the following movies a "T" classification, as OK for teens 12 & over, provided they are first previewed by an adult, prayed over to be sure they are suitable & not too strong for the teens who will be watching them & then fully explained to the teens while being viewed.
But the videos which are most recommended for teens as having good teen lessons & more generally suited & edifying for them are included in the list "Good Videos for Teens" in Hope Mag #3, coming soon! So the list below as well as the movies classified as "T" in this mag are OK for teens, but those on the teen list pubbed in the Hope are best for them, if available!
